Message From the President

2024 PLA Greetings,

I would like to thank Susan Read, the PLA Past President for successfully leading our organization over the last two years (2021-2023). Fortunately, Susan will remain on the PLA Board to provide us with her insight and knowledge. I would also like to give a shout out to three new PLA Board Members, consisting of Kate Estler, Kevin Kennedy, and Doug Phelps. These new Board members have already provided suggestions for enhancing our Lake projects. Here is a summary of the planned PLA activities for 2024:

 Conduct a Lake plankton sampling program from June to September, to enhance our understanding of the plankton food web, and monitor the population of the recent introduction spiny water flea.

 Provide the PLA website with sampling data of Piseco Lake water quality measurements from 1992 to 2023. Interpretative information will also be provided.

 Barbara McIlroy and the Terrestrial Invasive Plant Species (TIPS) Committee will continue their efforts to provide training and site inspections to identify, and where possible, remove TIP agents and suggest pollinators as a healthy replacement.

 The Adopt a Highway Program led by Rick Hilton, will continue to conduct cleanup activities along the two mile stretch of NYS Route 8. Dates for the 2024 cleanups are set for May 15, July 17, and September 18. Thanks to John Simons for leading the cleanup activities over the past several years.

 Bob Erickson (Trails and Recreation Committee) will continue monitoring the snow conditions on the 6.2-mile Foxey Brown Trail and provide updates on the Facebook Piseco Lake Facebook page.

 Chips and Ann Arend have initiated a PLA project to designate Piseco Lake as a “Loon Friendly Lake.” This certification program started in 2020 by the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation and requires seven criteria for certification. A separate summation of this program will be available on the PLA web site. Chips and Ann look forward to working with PLA volunteers to meet the program goals.

 The PLA will sponsor two youth ages 11-17 from the Town of Arietta for a one-week summer camp experience at Camp Colby Saranac Lake. Summer Camps - NYDEC Application instructions will be available on the PLA web site www.pisecolake.org.

 The PLA will host a Fourth of July fireworks shoot on July 5, 2024. Fireworks Donations are accepted online: www.pisecolake.org website (see DONATE tab upper right) or mailed to: PLA PO Box 84 Piseco NY 12139 Please be sure to identify donations specific to FIREWORKS

 In the afternoon of July 23, 2024, the PLA will sponsor a Meet & Greet at the (Irondequoit) Inn on Piseco Lake (www.pisecoinn.com). This will be an informal gathering with beverages, cash bar and light hors devours available.
