Message From the President

PLA Greetings,

As we embark on a new summer season, we hope to not repeat the nasty weather conditions experienced in August 2024.  Who would have predicted a tornado at Piseco?

The Piseco Lake Association (PLA) is switching to a new website platform, though still with the same provider who has been our webmaster the last three years. The way to access our website (pisecolake.org) will remain the same and the entire contents should appear the same to you. It is really only a change to those of us who work behind the scenes.

One improvement for us is that we can invoice members as a reminder to renew membership. In the next week you should receive an Invoice email to begin the renewal process. If you choose to renew by PayPal, you may complete the transaction online. If you want to pay by mail, our Post Office box and address will be indicated. If you want to pay in person (cash or check) we indicate the dates of the two membership meetings at which you can pay. If you do not wish to renew for any reason, simply ignore the email. We will not be issuing additional invoices or reminders.

There are a few people who have already renewed for 2025. We will try to intercept those invoices but, in any case, we have already shown you as paid and current in the system.

Please look at our new website and consider calling a Board member to volunteer. Our next activity is the highway cleanup on the 21st of May. PLA is pleased to propose the following activities:

·       Conduct a general meeting on July 12 at the Piseco Community Center, with a presentation provided by Cindy Kindle.  Cindy’s topic will focus on the New York State bird Atlas and birds in the Piseco area.

·       Conduct a business/member meeting on August 9 at the Piseco Community Center.  Two presentations will be provided.  First, Barbara McIlroy will discuss invasive terrestrial plants found around Piseco Lake and recommended control strategies to eliminate their presence.  Dick Waite will provide the second presentation covering Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, which is currently present in the Lake George area and can cause the death of Hemlock trees.

·       Continue to conduct a Lake plankton sampling program from June to September, to build upon our understanding of the Piseco Lake plankton food web, and monitor the population and impact of the recently introduced invasive spiny water flea.

·       Barbara McIlroy and the Terrestrial Invasive Species (TIS) Committee will continue their efforts to provide training and site inspections to identify, and where possible, remove TIS agents.

·       Rick Hilton has scheduled the Highway Cleanup to be conducted for the two mile stretch of NYS Route 8.  Dates for the 2025 cleanups are set for May 21, July 16, and September 17.

·        Bob Erickson (Trail and Recreational Committee) will continue to monitor conditions on the 6.2 mile Foxey Brown Trail, providing updates of trail conditions on the Facebook Piseco Lake web site.

·       Piseco Lake is now a designated Loon-Friendly Lake, thanks to the efforts of Chips and Ann Arend. See the PLA web site for additional information and maintenance activities to continue the program status.

·       The PLA will sponsor the Fourth of July fireworks display on July 3, 2025 from Poplar Point.

·       The PLA will again sponsor a Meet & Greet afternoon at the Irondequoit Inn; this year’s event will be July 24th.  The informal affair will be in the afternoon, with beverages and finger foods available.

Looking forward to another great summer at Piseco Lake.

David Wilson
