NYS DEC Southern Adirondack Trail Crew


DEC will be hiring 1 Trail Crew Supervisor and 4 Trail Crew Members to work on State land projects in
Hamilton and Fulton counties from May to October 2023 (tentative dates). A variety of trail projects will
be undertaken including but not limited to trail building, campsite hardening, bridge building/repair,
drainage work, blowdown clearing, rock work, relocating privies, turnpike installation and additional
tasks as assigned. Trail projects will be undertaken as assigned and will occur in both front country and
backcountry locations. The trail crew will be based out of and report to the Northville sub-office.
Projects occurring in the backcountry may require overnight travel. This will consist of camping out in
tents near project areas.

Southern Adirondack Trail Crew Member (Facility Operations Assistant 1)
Rate of pay $15.87/hour, 40-hour work week, 5-month seasonal job
Work includes being part of a 5-person trail crew working on a variety of trail projects on State lands in
the Southern Adirondacks. Projects may be 1-6 miles from the nearest road and will require a strenuous
hike with a heavy pack through all weather conditions. A variety of trail projects will be undertaken
including but not limited to trail building, campsite hardening, bridge building/repair, drainage work,
blowdown clearing, rock work, relocating privies, turnpike installation, and additional tasks as assigned.
Trail Crew Members will work with and maintain hand tools and other tools to complete projects. They
will work under the supervision of a Trail Crew Supervisor but may work alone or as part of a group
during the day.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Class D Driver’s License
• Must be able to carry a 50+ pound pack 6 miles, over rugged terrain
• Must be willing to work in all weather conditions
• Comfortable working in a backcountry setting for extended periods of time
Preferred additional qualifications:
• One year of practical experience in performing general construction or maintenance tasks
• Experience in trail work, preferably sustainable trail building and hardening techniques
• First Aid and CPR certifications
• Chainsaw training


Trail Crew Supervisor (Facility Operations Assistant 2)
Rate of pay $18.71/hour, 40-hour work week, 5-month seasonal job
Work includes overseeing a 4-person trail crew working on a variety of trail projects on State lands in
the Southern Adirondacks. The Trail Crew Supervisor will be responsible for working with and keeping
the crew on task as they complete various trail related projects. The Trail Crew Supervisor will work with
and maintain hand tools and equipment. They will be responsible for keeping track of Trail Crew
Member’s work schedule, communicating with administrative supervisor, interacting with the Land
Manager regarding scope of work for each project and keeping records of progress.
Minimum Qualifications: All the above qualifications for trail crew member, plus the following:
• Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Class D Driver’s License
• Must have experience in trail work, preferably sustainable trail building and hardening
techniques
• One year of practical experience in performing general construction or maintenance tasks
• Must have experience in leadership or supervisory roles
